Mega Cat Studios is going to take you back to the past – the 80s, in fact – with the release of their horror title Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit. Should players brave these animatronics threats, or is this title more sour than a Chuck E. Cheese salad bar?

The young sixth grader Oswald (or Oz, for short) is having a rough go at life. The city mill’s closed, his dad’s scraping by, and he has been forced to spend his youth at the dilapidated local pizza joint. It’s gotten to the point where he’s even sick of pizza – imagine the horror!
As it turns out, that quickly proves to be the least of Oswald’s fears after jumping into this crusty pizzeria’s sanctioned-off ball pit. Transported back to this pizza joint’s heyday in 1985 when it was Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, things quickly go topsy-turvy when its once-fun animatronics run amok.
However, jumping back into the pit to get back to the present day and present time doesn’t cure this ail, as Oswald’s dad gets pulled into the pit (hence the name!) and replaced with something far more sinister.
What follows in Into the Pit is a dastardly game of hide-and-seek filled to the brim with suspense. Oswald is a cowardly kid – even holding down the Shift key to run will have him falling down more often than not.
Rather, to escape Into the Pit’s many dangers, players will need to use their wits. A number of hiding spots, a Noise Meter, a flashlight, and inventory items are easily accessible, complete with key interaction points, and Objective listings streamlining the process. If all else fails, a quick jump into the ball pit proves to be the best time machine since the DeLorean.
Put simply, Into the Pit that players have the tools they need to survive, lure the animatronics away, save the kids, and get their pops back.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit channels the best elements of the survival horror genre to create something downright sinister. Taking cues from dastardly threats like Resident Evil 2’s Mr. X and Clock Tower’s Scissorman, carefully maneuver each area leads to a fair amount of suspense where the odds are stacked against the player.
By the time players get to the end of this approximately three hour title, they’ll have gotten a chance to know the pizzeria, home, school, and other maps in their head like the back of their hand – always a good sign.
Just be warned that there’s a fair amount of backtracking that factors into this map memorization. While things are tightly bound, players will oftentimes have to go from different time periods and exchange multiple key items to progress.
This is far from egregious – it will have you using your noggin, after all – but still worth noting for those who are less than keen on getting to the next plot point.
From its clever puzzles to its suspenseful horror, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit provides a compelling case to dive into the pit. For those who don’t mind a bit of backtracking, Into the Pit is a standout entry in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series.
