Metamorphosis VR Preview – Black Sun Productions CEO Talks Inspiration, Immersion, and Locomotion

Inspired by Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Black Sun Productions is providing a new perspective on life – quite literally as a cockroach – with their upcoming virtual reality title Metamorphosis VR.

We recently got a chance to attend an intimate Metamorphosis VR hands-off session with Black Sun Productions CEO Corbin Chase – see what awaits in this strange new world with our preview of this truly one-of-a-kind title.

Just try not to bug out.

Metamorphosis VR Preview – Black Sun Productions CEO Talks Inspiration, Immersion, and Locomotion

A lifelong gamer and fan of classic works like Snow Crash and Ready Player One, Chase set out to create Metamorphosis VR after playing Halo 4 during the early parts of the COVID pandemic. Truly immersed in its world, he asked himself:

What would it take technically to take the screen and bring it very close to me in virtual reality?

Seeing the potential that comes with the virtual reality space (and a big fan of tools like vorpX that take what’s on-screen and broadcasts it into flat screen VR), he launched Black Sun Productions to create incredible VR experiences that live up to his vision.

Metamorphosis VR serves as Black Sun Productions’ debut title. Built within the Kafka ecosystem, it features a core story around saving the life of a friend and regaining humanity.

However, there’s a twist; Metamorphosis VR has the traveling salesman protagonist Gregor transformed into a cockroach. Naturally, this will lead to a different perspective on life – in more ways than one.

A 1900s-era Vienna awaits, with players encountering oddball characters and the like through its environmental storytelling. Metamorphosis VR prides itself on its grand scale, all while providing a sense of alienation from an outside perspective.

Metamorphosis VR has been designed to be entertaining, all while embodying Kafka’s overall themes that touch upon the conflicts that define the human condition.

As a cockroach, Metamorphosis VR will feature a locomotion system that combines both running and crawling motions. One can also jump in this title by lifting their arms up quickly.

Chase stated that the system has been designed to be intuitive without being foreign to a human audience (that’s everybody reading this – we think).

On that note, Metamorphosis VR will also have players collecting egg effigies, listening to more than 4,000 lines of dialog, and experiencing approximately six to seven hours of playtime.

Finally, to make sure the experience is stylin’ and profilin’, Chase stated that Metamorphosis VR was designed to run well and maintain its visual fidelity on Meta Quest 2 and 3 devices.
