Unlike some of the other resources, Ancient Tablets are used exclusively for upgrades to your ship, the Adrestia. Also unlike other resources, Ancient Tablets are not in infinite supply. They cannot be farmed like leather or wood, as such they are much more valuable and more difficult to obtain.

One is a solid tower with a curved bottom. These are usually Spartan strongholds in a state of good repair and well guarded. These do not have Ancient Tablets. You are looking for the red tower icons in disrepair, with a large chunk missing from the side.
